National Health Insurance / Comprehensive Insurance for Foreigners
National Health Insurance is a universal healthcare system based on the Japanese National Health Insurance Act. It is designed to cover residents of Japan, including both Japanese nationals and foreign residents with permanent residency status.
As for insurance premium payments, the amount varies depending on income, but in the first year for foreign students, the insurance premium is approximately 2,000 yen per month. Subsequently, it may increase or decrease depending on income.
Generally, the personal burden for medical expenses is 30%, and individuals with low income facing high medical costs may have the remaining amount covered by the government, with a monthly cap set at 35,400 yen.
